Lug Nut Torque Specs: Complete Chart By Vehicle Make And Model

28 Июл,2026

Lug nut torque specs tell you how tight the lug nuts should be. The right number helps the wheel sit flat against the hub. It also helps protect the studs, threads and wheel seat.

Do not guess the final value. Use the ranges below as a quick guide, then check the owner’s manual or service manual for the exact make, model, year and wheel setup.

Why Correct Lug Nut Torque Matters

Lug nuts hold the wheel against the hub. Each one needs even pressure. If one nut is much tighter or looser than the others, the wheel may not sit right.

Loose lug nuts can cause shaking, clicking or wheel movement. If the problem gets worse, the wheel can become unsafe.

Too much torque can also cause damage. It can stretch the wheel studs, strip the threads or make the next tire change harder.

A torque wrench helps because it gives a real number. Tightening by feel is not enough for wheel hardware.

Lug Nut Torque Specs By Vehicle Make

Он lug nut torque specifications below are common ft-lb ranges. They are useful for quick checking, but they are not the final answer for every car. Always check the owner’s manual or service manual before tightening the wheels.

Factors That Affect Lug Nut Torque

Lug nut torque is not only based on the vehicle brand. The wheel, stud and lug nut all matter.

Start with the wheel stud thread size. The stud and lug nut must use the same thread. If they do not match, the nut can cross-thread before it ever gets tight.

The seat shape also matters. Some wheels use a cone seat. Some use a ball seat. Others use a flat seat. Different lug nut types need different seats, so the nut must match the wheel.

Wheel material can also change what needs to be checked. Steel wheels and alloy wheels may not use the same seat or hardware style.

Thread condition is important too. Many torque values are based on clean, dry threads. Oil, grease or anti-seize can change how the nut tightens.

How To Properly Torque Lug Nuts

Start each lug nut by hand. This helps you feel if the threads are lined up.

After that, snug the nuts lightly in a star pattern. Do not fully tighten one nut while the others are still loose.

Lower the vehicle until the tire touches the ground and cannot spin. Then use a динамометрический ключ for the final tightening.

Use this order:

  1. Start each lug nut by hand.
  2. Snug the nuts in a star pattern.
  3. Set the torque wrench to the vehicle spec.
  4. Tighten each nut in the same star pattern.
  5. Go around once more to confirm.
  6. Recheck after 50–100 miles if the wheel was removed.

An impact wrench can help remove lug nuts, but it should not be the final check. It can make the nuts too tight if the setting is wrong.

Lug Nut Size Chart

This lug nut size chart gives common thread sizes. Use it as a quick guide only. Always check the vehicle before ordering.

Thread SizeOften Seen On
M12 x 1.25Some Nissan, Subaru and Infiniti models
M12 x 1.5Many Honda, Toyota, Mazda, Hyundai and Kia models
M14 x 1.5Many newer SUVs, trucks and large cars
M14 x 2.0Some Ford, Lincoln and truck uses
1/2″-20Many older U.S. vehicles and trailers
9/16″-18Some heavy-duty truck and trailer uses

Lug nut size, stud length and wheel thickness should be checked together. If a spacer or thicker wheel reduces thread grip, extended wheel studs may be needed before the lug nut can hold enough thread.

Часто задаваемые вопросы

What Are Lug Nut Torque Specs?

Lug nut torque specs are the tightening numbers for wheel lug nuts. They are usually shown in ft-lb or Nm.

Are Lug Nut Torque Specifications The Same For Every Car?

Нет. Lug nut torque specifications change by make, model, year, wheel type and stud size. The manual gives the safest number.

What Happens If Lug Nuts Are Too Loose?

Loose lug nuts can cause shaking, clicking or wheel movement. If the problem is ignored, the wheel can become unsafe.
