Factors That Affect Lug Nut Torque
Lug nut torque is not only based on the vehicle brand. The wheel, stud and lug nut all matter.
Start with the wheel stud thread size. The stud and lug nut must use the same thread. If they do not match, the nut can cross-thread before it ever gets tight.
The seat shape also matters. Some wheels use a cone seat. Some use a ball seat. Others use a flat seat. Different lug nut types need different seats, so the nut must match the wheel.
Wheel material can also change what needs to be checked. Steel wheels and alloy wheels may not use the same seat or hardware style.
Thread condition is important too. Many torque values are based on clean, dry threads. Oil, grease or anti-seize can change how the nut tightens.
